Rethinking golf video analysis

Rethinking golf video analysis

August 9, 2022 7:58 PM

I’m sure I’m not alone in having lots of ideas - they come, they completely take over my brain, they may even result in some furious activity to scope them out and start building.  But they eventually fade into nothingness, leaving me with a half-formed codebase and some random server address somewhere.

But this one has stuck - not just for weeks, but for months…and months…and months.  And it isn’t that this idea is expected to make millions.  No, I’m excited because this could be a fun journey that scratches my own itch.

So what is it?

Well, it’s a golf thing.  I want to revolutionise the “video analysis” app to change the way I practice.

What’s the problem?

Video analysis is a really valuable tool in the armory of golf coaches and amateurs who want to improve.  But the process is annoying and doesn’t really match up with the goal - understanding whether what I feel I am doing matches what I am really doing.  There is no real-time feedback and lots of back and forth between camera and ball.

The idea

I’m going to build an app that provides feedback in real-time.  I am going to need all of the key features of a traditional video analysis app, with some extra magic dust thrown in

  • Remote control viewing on a second device - no more shuttling back and forth from the camera
  • Real-time feedback - intelligence to recognize when you have achieved what you wanted to achieve

How are you going to do it?

Quickly!!  Milestone one will be to prove that each element is possible.  I don’t care how the UI looks - developing a usable Proof of Concept in the next 2 weeks is the goal.
