Peter Finch Warm Up - 50-100y wedges

Setup to the ball without a club.  Place your hands across your chest and adopt your normal posture.  Make a big turn back and through, as if making a swing.  After each completed turn, bend from the hips to try to touch your toes.

Hit balls towards a target.  Change clubs after every shot.  Begin with the shorter clubs, and transition towards the longer clubs.

Setup a camera behind you, and a training aid to help you identify the original plane of the club (if you have one).  Make slow practice swings to feel the club staying on the right plane back and through.  When comfortable, hit a ball towards a target.  Use a camera for additional feedback to check you are doing it correctly.

With the clubs you would typically use from the tee, pick a target in the distance which is fairway width.  Hit shots from a tee at this target.

Ultimate Range Session - Peter Finch

Hit the ball with a different part of the clubface for each shot - alternate between heel and toe shots.

Each shot must be hit with a different club (irons and woods).

Each shot must be aimed at a different target.

Strike test - random clubs

Test your striking skills!  Use a magic marker to place a large dot on the back of the golf ball.  Hit shots with a driver or 3 wood, aiming contact the ball alternately in the heel, toe and center of the clubface.  Success is hitting the right part of the club.

Strike It - Driver

Setup to a 10-20y chip shot. Place a towel 4-6 inches behind the ball. Hit shots at the target with various clubs aiming to miss the towel.

Chipping strike

Place balls at 30y, 40y and 50y from the hole.  At each station, hit shots of different trajectories (low/medium/high) alternately, aiming to get the ball as close to the hole ad possible.

Pitching traj

Pick an imaginary green at a distance of 150-175 yards away, and approximately 30 feet across.

Hit shots at this target.

Each shot must be a different shot shape (draw or fade).

The goal is for the ball to finish on the imaginary green.

Mid-iron shot-shaping test - Intermediate

Back in the swing

Pick a target and set up to the ball with a mid-iron. Take a normal, neutral grip. 

From the top of the backswing, feel the club face squaring up early as the front arm rotates and the lead wrist bows. 

Exaggerate the feel so that it feels as if the club face is extremely shut, and you will hit big pull hooks. 

Bow the wrist

Place three pennies at 2ft, 3ft and 5ft from the ball, each on a different lines.  Aim to roll the ball over each of the pennies alternately, at varying speeds.

Set up to a normal shot aimed at a target.  Take your backswing as normal.  In the transition, do a deep squat while turning.  Hit the ball with the feeling of your body and the club handle being very low and open.   Extend up into the follow-through.

Indoor lockdown test

During the backswing, try to stay tall and fully extended.  At the start of the downswing, feel pressure into your lead foot - push down and back with your lead foot as if you were to jump behind where you rear foot is (i.e. away from the target).

Hit the shot with these feelings at speed.

Ground up speed

Hit shots to different targets between 30-80 yards at 10 yard increments.

Place a bucket next to the hole/target.  Scatter balls randomly around this target inside a radius of 10 yards.

Hit shots attempting to land the ball in the bucket.

Each shot must be hit with a different flight (high, medium, low).  Different clubs may be used.

The goal is to get the ball in the bucket, or land it within 1 foot of the bucket.

Bucket chipping (0-10y)

Adopt a normal setup and ball position with a mid-long iron. Aiming at a different target each time, hit full shots as low as you can. Any shots which fly at normal height or above represent a fail.

Setup a ball from a clean lie approximately 10 yards from the hole. Hit balls towards the hole aiming to finish as close as you can.

Strike It - Irons

Comeback session

Setup to hit a ball in good posture, aiming at a target. In transition to the downswing, feel the front knee, hip and shoulder rotate backwards so that hips and shoulders are open and behind the heel line as the club comes into the ball. 

Exaggerate the feeling of moving away from the ball, getting lower and creating lots of space to swing the club. 

Call whether or not you succeeded before checking on video. 

Rotation release

Hit balls towards different targets with a mid-iron.  Focus on shallowing the club in transition while swinging back towards the ball.  Aim to hit full shots aiming for a good strike.

On a scale of 1 --> 10, grip the club at a 10...so hard that your whole body tenses up to the maximum.  Then slowly release the tension down to a 1.  Once you have a good sense of what a 10 and a 1 feels like, go ahead and hit the ball with your level of tension and grip pressure at a '1'

Loose as a goose

Hit shots at different targets from a range of 50-75 yards.

Each shot must be hit at a different target and with a different club.

The goal is to land the ball close to the target.

Mid pitching (50-75y)

Iron play at the range

Using a different club each time, set up to a ball in your normal stance.

In slow motion, take three swings; the first should represent your best swing, including all of the movements and feelings which you are working on with your coach.  The second should represent your worst swing, including all of your usual faults and issues you are trying to get away from.  The final swing should once again be your best swing.

Using a different club each time, set up to a ball in your normal stance.

Take a swing in SUPER-SLOW MOTION.  Feel the movements and changes you are trying to make in your swing.  This should be one continuous motion - NO STOPPING.

Super slow swing

Without a club, stand still, tall and relaxed with your eyes closed.

Imagine you are taking an extremely slow swing.  Feel your muscles firing across your body as you swing the club back and through in one continuous motion, while remaining completely still and relaxed.
